Project information

Since 1986, professor Peter Akkermans has been in charge of the excavations at Tell Sabi Abyad.  He is professor of Near Eastern Prehistory at Leiden University and Curator of the Dept. of Ancient Near East of the Netherlands National Museum of Antiquities (photo right).

Initially the research took place under the auspices of the University of Amsterdam, later under the flag of the Netherlands National Museum of Antiquities and Leiden University.  

The excavation at Tell Sabi Abyad is one of the largest and most important archaeological projects in Syria today. Over 100 people participate in the fieldwork each year.
