The excavations on the five-hectare site of Tell Sabi Abyad have been carried out under the leadership of Professor Peter Akkermans since 1986. Leiden University and the Netherlands National Museum of Antiquities have taken the joint initiative to appoint Peter Akkermans to the special chair of ‘Prehistory of Western Asia, especially the period up to 4000 BC’. The archaeological investigation at Tell Sabi Abyad is an important part of the education programme attached to the chair. The Tell Sabi Abyad project is currently supported by the Netherlands National Museum of Antiquities, Leiden University, Syria Shell Petroleum Development B.V., Amsterdam Free University, State University Groningen, and the Foundation for Anthropology and Prehistory in the Netherlands. Thanks are also due to the Dutch Institute for Academic Studies in Damascus. The project takes place under the supervision of the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums of the Syrian Arab Republic (Damascus).

We are also grateful for the considerable help given by the Royal Dutch Embassy in Damascus, Syria. Our special thanks go to Mr. Roderick van Schreven, Ambassador, and to Mr. Gilles Beschoor Plug, Counsellor.
