Archaeologists on their way to Syria
A team of archaeologists from the National Museum of Antiquities, Leiden, The Netherlands, will soon go to Syria, in order to continue the excavations at Tell Sabi Abyad. The campaign will last from August 21 till October 31, 2004. The team consists of 28 persons, including archaeologists, specialists in other disciplines, and students. They come from various countries: the Netherlands, Syria, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Japan and Italy. The ruines of Tell Sabi Abyad will be further investigated for traces of occupation dating in the Neolithic period (ca. 7000-6000 BC) and in the Middle-Assyrian period (ca. 1200 BC). The research at Tell Sabi Abyad is supported by the Netherlands National Museum of Antiquities, Leiden University, Free University Amsterdam, Foundation for Anthropology and Prehistory in the Netherlands, and Syria Shell Petroleum Development B.V.
