Peter Akkermans appointed professor

On November 17, 2003, Dr Peter M.M.G. Akkermans, curator of the department for the Ancient Near East of the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities and project director of the excavations at Tell Sabi Abyad, was appointed professor at Leiden University. His teaching assignment is: “The prehistory of Western Asia, with special attention to the period before c. 4000 BC”. See also: Leiden professors

Together with Glenn Schwartz (Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore) he has recently written a book about the archaeology of Syria: The Archaeology of Syria – From Complex Hunter-Gatherers to Early Urban Societies (ca. 16,000 – 300 BC), Cambridge 2003.
